What you need
A steel tape measure, a pencil and paper. Avoid fabric tapes — they stretch.
Inside-recess blinds
Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom of the recess. Use the smallest measurement.
Measure the height at the left, middle and right. Use the largest measurement.
Note whether anything protrudes into the recess, such as handles or tiles.
Outside-recess blinds
Measure the width of the window and add at least 8–10 cm on each side to reduce light gaps.
Measure from where the headrail will sit to the sill or where you want the blind to end.
Common mistakes
Rounding measurements instead of recording them to the nearest millimetre
Measuring only once
Forgetting window handles that block the blind
